Lifeguards vs. Swim Coaches: The Two Types of Teachers

Introduction:

Have you ever noticed how some children’s faces light up when they see a certain teacher, while others may not show the same enthusiasm? There’s a profound reason behind this phenomenon, and it’s all about the teacher’s approach in the classroom. In my recent classroom observation, I stumbled upon an analogy that beautifully encapsulates this difference: the distinction between a lifeguard and a swim coach.

The Lifeguard Teacher:

Picture a lifeguard at a bustling beach, vigilant and watchful. Their primary mission is crystal clear: ensure the safety of everyone in the water. Similarly, a lifeguard teacher adopts a similar approach in the classroom. Their watchful eyes scan for potential hazards, they remind students of the rules, and they swiftly correct any behavior that veers even slightly off course. While a lifeguard teacher can be warm and caring, their overarching objective is to prioritize safety over emotional connection.

The Swim Coach Teacher:

Now, imagine a swim coach at the poolside, fully immersed in the water alongside the children. This coach isn’t just focused on safety; they’re also eager to engage with their young charges. They join in play, listen attentively to the children’s perspectives, and exhibit genuine curiosity about their thoughts and feelings. This type of teacher seeks to establish a deep, personal connection with each child, which I like to call a “heart connection.” Children can sense this connection, and they respond to it with joy and enthusiasm.

The Power of the “Heart Connection”:

I’ve witnessed this contrast time and time again. In my coaching membership program, I emphasize the importance of transforming teachers from lifeguards into swim coaches. This transformation involves learning meaningful ways to connect with children while grounding these techniques in the latest brain research on the development of young minds. By becoming a “swim coach,” you can elevate your teaching craft and become the kind of teacher who not only ensures safety but also fosters deep, meaningful connections with your students.

Conclusion:

In the world of teaching, there are lifeguards and there are swim coaches. While both have their roles, the transformative power lies in becoming a swim coach who not only ensures safety but also forges deep connections with young minds.
